Cerro al Volturno (Cièrrë in Molise) is an Italian town of 1 194 inhabitants in the province of Isernia in Molise, about 20 km from the border with Abruzzo. The municipality is also simply called Cerro because of its territory rich in oak woods, among which the Cerro, Quercus cerris, stands out. The Cerrese territory is on the border with the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. The climate is mainly of the Apennine type: cool and rainy autumn, cold and snowy winter and mild summer. The town was founded by the Samnites (III century BC), of which fortifications remain at Mount Santa Croce. In medieval times the hill of the present village was colonized by peasants (9th century), since the fiefdom depended on the nearby Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno. The origin of the community itself is linked to the influence of the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in the Kingdom of Naples and in the land of San Pietro, together with Montecassino and Farfa. Cerro already existed since 899, as evidenced in the Chrnicon Vulturnense, when Roffredo, abbot of San Vincenzo led the first peasant colony to cultivate the lands in the place of Cerrum, from the name of the oak trees. The 11th century Norman castle was later owned by the Filangieri, Borrello and Cantelmo di Popoli family, until the 15th century, when it passed to the Pandone family, who renovated it extensively. In the following centuries the feud belonged to various families, including the Carafa. In 1811 the village passed to the territory of Benevento, and only in 1861 was it included again in Molise, first linked to the territory of Piedimonte Matese, and then to the area of Castellone Volturno, i.e. Castel San Vincenzo. Since 1970 it has been part of the province of Isernia.

Castelpetroso is home to the Shrine of Maria Santissima Sorrows, patron saint of Molise. According to the testimony of the visionaries, the Virgin Mary first appeared on March 22, 1888 to two shepherds named Serafina and Bibiana in Cesa between Saints, on the slopes of Mount Patalecchia. This first appearance was followed by others. This phenomenon was later recognized. The shrine, which began with the laying of the first stone on September 28, 1890 and completed in 1975, is made in the neo-Gothic style; seen from above is composed of seven chapels depicting the seven sorrows of Our Lady, in the center of which there is the dome 54 meters high. The shrine and the place of apparitions are connected to each other by the Via Matris, 750 meters long, where precisely remember the seven Marian sorrows.

Isernia - Chiesa di Santa Chiara

La chiesa di Santa Chiara, insieme al monastero omonimo, è stata fondata nel 1275. Allo stato attuale, però, non esistono più tracce dell'edificio originario. Nel 1809 il monastero fu soppresso, mentre verso la fine del secolo un terremoto danneggiò seriamente la chiesa, che per questo fu chiusa al culto; la riapertura avvenne il 10 ottobre 1910. Durante la Prima guerra mondiale, l'ex edificio monasteriale servì da alloggio a prigionieri austriaci e ungheresi. La chiesa custodisce la statua dell'Addolorata che, durante la processione del Venerdì Santo, viene trasportata dai portantini subito dietro a quella del Cristo morto.

Molise - Fornelli (IS)

Fornelli (Furnièllè in molisano) è un comune italiano di 1.905 abitanti della provincia di Isernia nel Molise. Fa parte del circuito dei Borghi più belli d'Italia. È città dell'olio. Giace in parte su una collina lambita dal torrente Vandra, che confluisce nel Volturno, e in parte sul monte Cervaro, ove supera i 1000 metri. Il nome gli deriva forse da un forno per la produzione di laterizi cotti presente nell'antichità nel paese e al servizio della Badia di San Vincenzo. Fornelli, infatti, è caratterizzato da un terreno ricco di argilla.

Matrice. Chiesa di Santa Maria della Strada

Nostra Signora della Via (Italian: Santa Maria della Strada) is an abbey in the municipality of Matrice, Campobasso. The date of construction of the abbey is not known, but it was consecrated in August 1148 by Peter II, archbishop of Benevento. In 1153 it appears in a list of churches and monasteries under the jurisdiction of Peter II drawn up for Pope Anastasius IV. The first abbot may have been called Landulfus, as "Abbas Landulfus" was engraved on a paving stone inside the church. Nazzarius is named abbot in a document from 1176. His foundation has historically been linked to the monastery of Santa Sofia of Benevento, but there is no evidence to support this claim. It is possible that the great abbey of Montecassino was involved, but the fact that the abbey is not listed as a subject house in medieval documents casts doubt on this claim. The eponymous Santa Maria de Strata appears in a register of the Abbey's possessions, but is believed to refer to a separate monastery in the vicinity of San Germano.

Agnone (Agnèune in dialetto locale) è un comune italiano di 4 957 abitanti della provincia di Isernia in Molise. Fino al 1811, per circa 600 anni, Agnone e il suo circondario sono sempre stati parte integrante del Giustizierato d'Abruzzo e dell'Abruzzo Citra, nel distretto di Lanciano. Antica città sannita, è sede del più antico stabilimento al mondo per la fabbricazione delle campane (Pontificia fonderia di campane Marinelli), fondato intorno all'anno 1000 e tra i pochi che possano fregiarsi dell'onore di utilizzare per i propri prodotti lo stemma pontificio. Agnone è una cittadina di circa 5000 abitanti ubicata nell'Alto Molise. Si trova a 830 m di altitudine sul livello del mare, circondato da un paesaggio montuoso rivestito da boschi e praterie.
